I would like to offer my personal condolences to all in the Unit in Hanover, and to Connie and Michael's family. Michael was an esteemed contemporary; he was a force of nature in the field, and a polymath, who could effortlessly straddle many disciplines in Hepatology and Medicine.

His contributions to the science of Hepatology live on. He earned the respect of his colleagues and those he trained. His leadership in European and International Hepatology speaks volumes of his innate ability, intelligence and drive.

I was saddened to learn of his untimely death. His wisdom and knowing smile will be missed by colleagues.

I worked with Prof. Manns on numerous occasions over the past 20 years. He was a true leader in the field of hepatology, but more importantly he was a kind and generous person. He will truly be missed. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

Dear Colleagues , dear Family

I knew Michael Mannss since more than 30 years. Michael was one of the most brilliant hepatologists in the world. He was a worldclass specialist of autoimmune hepatitis, and was strongly involved in viral hepatitis and liver transplantation. He asked me to be part of the SAB of the REBIRTH Cluster of excellence. He was a true Europeean and was maintaining high the level of European Hepatology. He had an incredible energy which impressed me a lot. He was a true friend. I will miss him a lot. All my deepest condolences to his numerous colleagues from Hannover and to his family.

Lieber Herr Manns,

Michael Manns was absolutely amazing, as a human being, a world-class scientist and as a narrator of science. Only a few weeks ago we sat together at a conference table and - like being at a campfire - he told the most amazing stories and anecdotes about discoveries and the people who made them and often also about the absurdities and unbearable lightness of life. An encyclopedia of science, the Bill Bryson of Medicine. And his own science was great. I know the H factor is all relative but still gives some hint of output and impact. His impact and legacy in hepatology were and are outstanding.

Dear Michael, so sad to see you go home, wherever your home is now. So sad to miss your stories and advice and guidance, all of which was always deeply embedded in humanity and an urge and willingness to make the world a better place.

My condolence to his family and all his dear friends.

´´He called and called. Standing in that inexplicable darkness. Where there was no sound anywhere save only the wind. After a while he sat in the road. He took off his hat and placed it on the tarmac before him and he bowed his head and held his face in his hands and wept. He sat there for a long time and after a while the east did gray and after a while the right and godmade sun did rise, once again, for all and without distinction.´´ Cormac McCarthy - The Crossing.
