I first met Micheal Manns during an EASL School of Hepatology during my gastroenterology training, in the last 20 years I had many moments with him which included meetings, sessions but also fun moments like an NBA game in Miami.

Michael Manns will be remembered as a giant, an innovator and a visionary in Hepatology and gastroenterology. But I will also personally remember him for his kindness, his dedication and his clever wit.

His legacy will continue to live on in the students and colleagues he guided and the scientific societies and the institutions he guided and reshaped.

I will deeply miss Michael but his spirit and vision remain will remain with me and with the whole Hepatology comunity.

To a Renowned Global Scientist

The sad news of your passing is a solemn reminder of the ephemerality of life and its true essence.
It was a privilege to have met you in January 2025 at the International DFG/DZIF Joint Meeting on Viral Infections of the Liver and the Heart in Berlin, where your inspiring speech on sustaining achievements in hepatology and medicine left a lasting impression on all in attendance.

Your departure is a profound loss to the global scientific community and the field of medicine. The impact of your excellent work in viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver diseases, hepatocellular carcinoma, transplantation, and regenerative medicine will endure for generations to come.

My deepest thoughts and prayers are with your family, colleagues, and friends during this difficult time.

Thank you, Prof. Dr. Michael P. Manns, for your remarkable legacy and invaluable contributions to humanity.

It is with profound sadness that I learned of Michael Manns’ passing. It feels far too soon to lose not only an outstanding academic and brilliant hepatologist but also a trusted friend, a person of intellectual honesty and generosity. I feel truly privileged to have known him, to have shared conversations and moments reflecting on medicine and on life—his sharp insight was always inspiring.

Rest in peace, dear Michael. Thank you for your guidance and for all that you gave to hepatology and to those lucky enough to know you—you will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

Dear Michael,
Your untimely passing saddens me, you were a teacher and a friend to me. I still remember when I met you for the first time, more than 30 years ago, you inspired a bit of awe, due to your fame and authority in the hepatology world.

But then I had the opportunity to get to know you more closely, and this allowed me to admire your experience, clinical preparation, your scrupulousness, and the strength of character that you were able to demonstrate until the end.

Then in the last 5 years we have shared the wonderful experience together with Tom Karlsen and many other colleagues from the EASL Lancet Commission, which has allowed us to passionately discuss many topics in the common interest of doing something more in Europe, for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases. Your knowledge of the academic world, your being recognized as an authority for your scientific publications, as well as your ability to interact with political institutions, has been fundamental to the growth of Hepatology and Gastroenterology.

It was then an enormous honor for me to be the person entrusted by the UEG Council with the presentation of the "UEG Lifetime Achievement Award to Michael Manns" on October 8, 2022.

But I would like to conclude with a thought addressed to your Family, for whom your passing is an immense sadness, your Family who always came first for you: Your Michael leaves an unbridgeable void, but the memory for those of us who had the pleasure of knowing him and working together will remain alive forever.

Eine meiner Erinnerungen an Professor Manns ist, dass er trotz der unglaublichen Terminfülle sich immer auch Zeit genommen hat und ein Ohr hatte für Einzelne. Ich denke mit Dankbarkeit daran zurück, dass er sich für die Einrichtung eines pflegewissenschaftlichen Studiengangs einsetzte und wir oft bei Begegnungen über pflegerische Themen ins Gespräch kamen.

Lieber Herr Professor Manns,

2003 kam ich in Ihre Abteilung. Zunächst als Sekretärin in das noch junge HepNet. Sehr bald übertrugen Sie mir die Aufgabe, die Fortbildungsveranstaltungen Ihrer Abteilung zu betreuen. Und dann kam die VISZERALMEDIZIN 2006. Sie, Prof. Buhr, Dr. Meier, Ihre Frau (die wunderschöne Deko beim Präsidentendinner!), Prof. Wedemeyer: in diesem Dream Team ließen Sie mich ohne ständiges Nachfragen und Kontrollieren völlig eigenverantwortlich arbeiten. Für Ihr Vertrauen in meine Arbeit werde ich Ihnen für immer dankbar sein.
Es gab so viele Ideen für diesen Kongress. Sie planten einen Tag der Forschungsverbünde, Dr. Meier begründete das Endolounge dinner, Prof. Buhr hatte die Idee, die Stadt Hannover einzubeziehen und Schulen und Kindergärten bauten große Pappmaché-Nanas (eine saß sogar im Rollstuhl). Was war das für eine Arbeit, bis wir die endlich ins HCC geschafft hatten! Über 4000 Teilnehmer kamen (Rekord), Der Kongress wurde ein überwältigender Erfolg. Und immer, wenn wir uns später gelegentlich auf Kongressen trafen, tauschten wir Erinnerungen an diesen großen Kongress aus.

Zuletzt haben wir uns vor 3 Jahren gesehen als ich in Rente ging. Da kamen Sie, der Präsident der MHH, mit einem dicken Blumenstrauß einfach so zu mir ins Henriettenstift obwohl ich da schon seit 15 Jahren nicht mehr bei Ihnen arbeitete, um mich zu verabschieden. Mehr Menschsein geht nicht. Ich werde Sie nie vergessen.

Lieber Michael,

Dein früher Tod hat eine riesige Welle der Betroffenheit und Trauer in der Wissenschaft ausgelöst.

Wir verlieren in Dir nicht nur einen Leuchtturm der MHH, der international Maßstäbe gesetzt hat, sondern einen Menschen mit außergewöhnlicher emotionaler Intelligenz und Präsenz.

In den gemeinsamen Jahren an der MHH sind wir uns oft persönlich begegnet, noch vor kurzem bei der Antrittsvorlesung meiner Nachfolgerin Nataliya Di Donato.

Du hast es verstanden, mich und die Humangenetik für das Thema Hepatozelluläres Karzinom zu begeistern. Wir waren stolz, Teil der Klinischen Forschergruppe und des SFB zu sein.
Deine Motivation wirkt fort, jetzt in der DFG-Forschergruppe.
