I was deeply saddened to learn of Michael's passing on August 15th.
His passing is a tremendous loss for the hepatology and gastroenterology community.
Michael was an amazing academic achiever, a charismatic leader, an inspiring mentor, and a visionary. In short, he was one of a kind.
Among his many accomplishments, he built an exceptional team in Hanover with world-renowned colleagues and friends.
I have known Michael for almost 20 years. I was deeply impressed when we first met, of course, given his stature and achievements. Then, I got to know him better and regularly met with him around the world. Michael was a great storyteller. I enjoyed his anecdotes and our passionate and warm discussions over a beer—not only about hepatology, but also about many other topics. Michael had a broad culture and many centers of interest. He was a gentleman and a person of great honesty and humanity, with a genuine interest in people.
I also had the privilege of working with Michael while we led EASL and UEG, and I learned a great deal from him.
I will miss him dearly.
On behalf of the Beaujon group, I extend my deepest condolences to his wife Connie, his children, and Heiner and Markus and their great team.
