I was shocked to hear of Michael’s passing. I have known Michael for more than 3 decades. He was someone I looked up to as a researcher, mentor, and leader. He knew everything in hepatology from the latest scientific data to the nuances of clinical practice. He was a master in bringing consensus on controversial topics. I had been at many meetings that seemed to be going nowhere after hours of heated debate when Michael gently summarized opinions from different sides and miraculously unite the differences into a decision or plan that everyone applauded. What I remember most about Michael though is his smile, he had the unique ability to put everyone at ease and to feel welcome. While I have not directly worked with Michael, I have learned a lot from him. Michael might be gone but he will not be forgotten, his legacy will live on not only through all the great work he had done and the fond memories of all who have the fortune to know him but also through the outstanding team he built in Hannover.
My sincerest condolences to Michael’s family and the Hannover Hepatology Team.
